| A client of mine is a senior exec who reports directly to the CEO. She called last week, frustrated and confused by the mixed messages she was getting about completing a project the CEO had assigned her. His instruction to her some time ago was to create a detailed report based on certain other company data. She has repeatedly asked him for the data and he keeps saying he will get it to her, but doesn’t. Now it is three days until the project is due - not nearly enough time to do it at her typical level of excellence.
I know that in situations like this there is at least one unspoken ludicrous question being asked, so I suggested she do what I call a “Ludi-sweep” to find it. And there it was: “May I withhold data you need to complete a project I assigned you?” Or, “May I ask you to do what I won’t support you in doing?” Once she spotted the Ludi-Q, she was able to sort the situation more objectively and see a path to resolving it with him. Ludi-Q’s are a new way of seeing that serves you in real time, with real problems. By the way, what unspoken ludicrous question might she have been asking herself? May I ask you to do what I won’t support you in doing? |
